24H ON THE ESPERANZA
The Esperanza, one of the 3 Greenpeace ships (with the Rainbow Warrior and the Artic Sunrise), was in the harbor of Amsterdam for renovation during some weeks in September.
In order to make crew members interviews, we had the great opportunity, with my volunteer colleague Egbert Born, to navigate with the crew from Amsterdam to Rotterdam, a trip which takes not less than 7 hours. The arrival at 9:00 pm permitted to meet the crew, which some members left the ship after a 3 months assignment.
After a short night in one of the ship cabins, we were up on the desk at 7:00 am to leave the harbor. The route included the passage of the lock to enter on the sea. During the afternoon, the Greenpeace crew made some training with two zodiacs, to check everything was working correctly for the next assignment. The arrival in the harbor of Rotterdam was at 6:00 pm, and after a last meal shared with all the team, it was time to leave the boat, which would leave Rotterdam two days after for a new assignment during months on the seas.
