Green Power Campaign in Amsterdam - 2016

The municipality of Amsterdam buys its power from E.ON, a supplier that produces electricity from its own brand new coal fired plant, near from Rotterdam. Coal is the most polluting fossil fuel with the biggest impact on climate change. The city of Amsterdam signed a contract with so called "Guarantees of Origin" certificates or GvO's (Garanties van Oorsprong) issued by the Afval Energie Bedrijf Amsterdam (the waste management company of Amsterdam). The use of these certificates enables them to delay their action and commitment for this issue.

We know the Mayor and the Municipal Executive Board have great ambitions to make Amsterdam a sustainable city. To attain this, Amsterdam should join the group of 100% green power supplied towns.
Many organizations are involved in the energy contract with the municipality, including GVB (public transport) and WaterNet (running water company of the city). Most of the time employees, administrators and users of the services of these organizations have no idea the electricity they are using is actually coming from an unclean source.

In the face of this situation, Amsterdam citizens put in place a project in June 2016 to change the power contract when it will be renewed on 1st January 2018.
Among others, a petition is available for citizens, and because faces are without any doubt more meaningful, residents of all districts were photographed with a large solar panel, carrying a clear message: Amsterdam citizens want renewable energy for their city, and they show it.

This series has been presented to the members of the City Hall Commission during the municipal Council in order to ask the members to vote in favor of a sustainable energy provider contract.
In December 2016, the citizens' movement was present during a second municipal council to support their demand and to present the petition with 3422 signatures. The result is a great victory,  the municipality of Amsterdam has announced the energy contract will be readjusted with a green supplier.  In September 2018,  Greenchoice won the tender for the new contract starting in 2019.
